"The Wounded Knee Massacre, which took place on December 29, 1890, was the final major conflict between Native Americans and the U.S. military. It occurred at the Lakota Sioux reservation in South Dakota, near Wounded Knee Creek. The U.S. Army attempted to disarm the Lakota, and a confrontation ensued, leading to the massacre of around 150 to 300 Lakota men, women, and children. The battle marked the end of the Indian resistance to U.S. expansion and was a tragic and pivotal event in Native American history."
