"The Peter MacDonald riot occurred in 1989 on the Navajo Nation, sparked by tensions surrounding the leadership of Peter MacDonald, who was serving as the President of the Navajo Nation. MacDonald’s leadership was controversial, with critics accusing him of authoritarianism and mismanagement. The riot erupted when a group of protesters, including Navajo traditionalists and political opponents, clashed with police and MacDonald’s supporters in a dispute over his control of the Navajo Nation government. The incident highlighted divisions within the Navajo Nation, particularly over the balance between traditional Navajo governance and modern political structures.
